Released in 1993 exclusively for the PC Engine, Chapter of Griffon is an adventure game based on the popular Patlabor manga/anime series. The player takes control of Ingram pilot Noa Izumi, using a menu system to move her between available locations, talk to people, and look around. A good amount of dialogue is voiced, and this voice work is done by the original anime voice cast. To add some life to the still images Riverhill Soft created the Active Window System - certain scenes have an additional smaller window overlay showing a short animation. While adventure games of this type are quite linear Patlabor offers some degree of freedom in that Noa may freely move around and talk to people even if interaction with that scene or character doesn't advance the plot. As well as charting the epic struggle of Ingram vs Griffon, the disc also contains an impressive wealth of extras. There's a Labor-themed Janken (AKA rock, paper, scissors) game, interviews with the cast, information on key members of Headgear (the creators of Patlabor), a short radio drama, Labor technical specs (voiced by cast members), an animation viewer and a selection of adverts for the game. Haha, good old Japanese gamers and their 'mechs'! :) Looks like a pretty sweet game, if only I had access to and Engine CD-ROM :(
Give me a game with giant robots in it and I'm a happy lady! :)
I do love my PCE but hardware's never been something I've enjoyed spending money on, hopefully you'll find a PCE game one day that'll give you the push you need ;)
There's already one - Gates of Thunder! I really want to get a Duo someday but they're a bit pricey :|
Nice choice! Hopefully you'll find a bargain PCE some day soon :)
Simon: While you wait to buy that PCE, you should invest in Magic Engine. It's an emulator that's well worth its price, IMO.
As for this game: As is often the case with the games you mention here, Kimimi, I'd pick it up if I could understand a word of it. Looks great, at the very least!
Thank you for the compliment, Bryan! I'm always happy to shed a bit of light on games like this ^^~
